Seladamex Co., a company with investments in Cambodian cotton, said exports should soon fetch a high price in the international market, the company’s executive director said on Wednesday.
Cambodian cotton grown on over 1,500 ha in two provinces should fetch even more in future, Kong Chan told DAP News Cambodia.
About 1,300 ha is grown by farmers in Battambong and areas of Kampong Cham province.
“At the end of 2009, our company will plan over 1,000 tons of cottons to export to Vietnam after we harvest,” said Kong Chan.
For the last two years Seladamex has been cooperating with foreign investors to set up the exports, he added.
In early 2009, the company contracted farmers and finalized export plans, he said. The promised cotton farmers, especially in Battambong province, a price of US$400 per ton, and processed cotton will sell in the international market for around US$ 1,500 per ton.
Kampong Cham Provincial Director of Department of Agriculture Heng Biny told DAP News Cambodia that “Now, farmers are planting over 200 ha in Stung Trang, MeMoth, and Ponheakrek districts, but they can harvest only 126 ha because some upland regions were damaged by natural disaster [Typhoon Ketsana].”
Flooding has taken a heavy toll in the area, he added.
