DRUNKEN GUNFIRE GETS GUARD DETAINED
Police in Phnom Penh arrested a bodyguard after he allegedly shot his gun into the air twice in a drunken haze Friday. Police said the incident occured in front of the Chinese embassy on Mao Tse-tung Boulevard in the capital’s Chamkarmon district, and that the bodyguard used “unreasonable actions” and unkind words when he was stopped by officers following the gunfire. No one was injured in the incident, and the man was detained temporarily by military police.

COPS SAY CHEF SERVED BOSS A PLATE OF THEFT
A 27-year-old chef from Koh Kong has been arrested after she was accused of stealing US$10,000 from her employer. Police say the chef worked in the household of a Phnom Penh woman. The chef allegedly confessed to swiping the cash from her boss’s handbag Thursday and fleeing to her home in Koh Kong’s Sre Ambel district. However, the chef said she only found $8,000 in her boss’s bag. She returned $5,000 after her arrest and has been sent to court.

HUNTER SHOOTS THE WRONG TYPE OF GAME
A 23-year-old man in Mondulkiri province has been seriously injured after he was shot in the leg when a hunter apparently mistook him for a tasty animal. Authorities say the man was shot with an AK-47 rifle while he was collecting rubber in the forest last week. The man’s family reported that a hunter, thinking the man was an animal, had fired on him intentionally, and that the bullet ricocheted off a tree and struck the victim in the leg. The victim was sent to the district hospital before being transported to the larger provincial hospital in Kampong Cham province.

NIECE ACCUSES UNCLE OF SEXUAL ASSAULT
Police in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district have arrested a 45-year-old motorbike taxi driver after he was accused of raping his 17-year-old niece. The victim told police her uncle slapped her in the face and threatened to kill her if she went against his wishes. She said the man gave her US$5 not to tell anyone about the alleged assaults. Police said the suspect has denied the accusations. Investigators are waiting for the results of medical examinations on the woman. Police and the victim said she had been staying with the man’s family so that she could study at a school located in the capital.
