Farmer arrested over beating of infant son
A 33-year-old farmer was on Sunday arrested and detained on suspicion of force-feeding his 1-year-old son chillies and beating him unconscious in Kampong Chhnang province’s Cholkiri district. Police said the man often mistreated his son, particularly when he was drunk, because he was angry about being left to care for the boy alone while his 22-year-old wife worked in a garment factory in Phnom Penh. The infant’s grandmother sent the boy to the provincial hospital on Saturday after finding him unconscious. KAMPUCHEA THMEY
Policeman accused of second assault
A 25-year-old beer promotion worker has filed a complaint against a police officer accused of slapping her three times across the face in Battambang town on Saturday. Police said the suspect was in love with the woman and was angry that she had spurned his advances, though the woman had explained that she is already married to a man with whom she has a child. The policeman reportedly visited the woman’s workplace on New Year’s Eve, and flew into a jealous rage upon watching her serve other customers. The woman, who had just accepted a settlement after a previous complaint against the man, has requested an additional US$3,000 in compensation. KOH SANTEPHEAP
Drunk man held for abusing military police
A 23-year-old man was arrested and detained after drunkenly arguing with military police officials in Kampong Cham province’s Memot district on Saturday. Police said the man, who lives in Phnom Penh, was “completely drunk” after attending a wedding, when he went to watch a volleyball game and conducted himself in a disorderly manner. When two military police officials approached the man and asked him to explain his behaviour, he “outright fought” and “swore at them badly”, officials said. Five detained after attempted attack
Military police arrested and detained five men accused of an attempted attack on a group of 10 men in Phnom Penh’s Toul Kork district on Saturday. Police said one of the arrested men had called for backup from his friends, after a group of 10 drunken men started throwing stones at him. The five men, who were armed with wooden sticks and metal implements, were intercepted by police and arrested before they could hurt anyone. Police said they would be “educated” before being released without charge. KAMPUCHEA THMEY
