Fundraiser: Candy Lacey and her raffle stall
A Woodley woman has signed up for a gruelling six-day trek through the tropical landscape of Cambodia to support a cause very close to her heart.
Candy Lacey will be shouldering her backpack in the South East Asian country that borders Thailand in October to join the Action Medical Research charity’s Trek Cambodia Challenge.
This will be the second time the 30-year-old has put her best boot forward for the charity.
A year ago she walked 80 miles through the desert in Namibia, with the temperature a searing 40 degrees. But keeping her going every difficult step of the way is her determination to raise money to help premature babies and save tiny lives.
Miss Lacey was born 10 weeks early, weighing just a few ounces over two pounds and with a hole in her intestine, and she wants to help others battle through a difficult start, as she did.
Miss Lacey, from Austin Road, said yesterday: “Until an information day in May I won’t know who else is walking or the exact arrangements, but I guess it will be like Namibia where people went ahead and set up the camp for the night.
“I am expecting this trek to be a little easier, though, because at least it will be ‘hard floor’ underfoot.”
She added: “The worst part about Namibia was the first day, trekking through sand in 40 degrees’ heat. I was one of only three out of 45 who didn’t get blisters.
“I am excited about the whole experience – Cambodia isn’t the place you would normally choose for a holiday, so it will be interesting.”
The Cambodia Challenge promises to take the walkers through the unseen treasures of the sacred Phnom Mountains and to one of the wonders of the ancient world, the Temples of Angkor. Eighties pop stars Martin Fry, singer with ABC, and Richard Drummie from Go West are also signed up for the trek.
But before she can join them, Miss Lacey has to raise at least £3,000 – she already has £500 from a raffle and her other fundraising plans include washing cars with work colleagues at Xact Marketing in Headley Road East.
Anyone wanting to sponsor her and help the charity fund vital research to help babies and children can do so via the Action Medical Research website at
