POLICE in Chamkarmon district’s Boeung Keng Kang I commune have arrested and temporarily detained five men suspected of drug trafficking in Phnom Penh.

Commune Police Chief Kong Sophat said municipal anti-drug trafficking police had assisted local officials in a raid on a house in Boeung Keng Kang I on Saturday, during which the five men were arrested.

“They rent a house to commit drug trafficking,” he said, adding that during the raid police had confiscated two boxes of methamphetamine, 12 ecstasy pills, drug paraphernalia and a Lexus car.

He said police had suspected the group of involvement in drug trafficking “for many years”, but had not had enough evidence to make the arrests until the weekend.

He said the suspects had not yet been charged and were being detained at the municipal Anti-Drug Trafficking Bureau pending further investigations. An official from the bureau, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the five were being detained but declined to comment further citing ongoing investigations.

“We are working this case. We can not give any more details,” he said. “We are afraid other suspects will escape.”

Meanchey district bust
In an unrelated case, the 22-year-old son of the deputy director of the Phnom Penh Youth Association – an organisation that, among other things, advises youths against taking illegal narcotics – has been arrested on suspicion of trafficking in drugs, police said yesterday.

Yin Kiri, police chief in Meanchey district’s Chbar Ampov I commune, said the suspect was arrested on Friday and charged the following day after officials confiscated 219 methamphetamine and ecstasy pills.

“Police saw him with another youth attempting to do business [with the drugs],” he said.
