Mining pact
Cambodia's minister of mines inked an agreement with representatives from the United Nations Development Programme yesterday, to help ensure sustainable development of the nascent mining sector.
Douglas Broderick, resident representative of UNDP Cambodia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the minister, Suy Sem.
Under the agreement, the two parties agreed to cooperate to ensure responsible development of the mining sector and support the development of policies and regulations needed to manage the industry in a sustainable way, as well as capacity building.
Suy Sem, according to a statement, said the government was "committed” to mitigating harmful economic impacts from mining and developing the sector "in a way that Cambodian people and communities realise the benefits”.
