LEADING officials from ASEAN+3 nations of South Korea, China and Japan supported a five-year plan to bolster ASEAN tourism yesterday.

Officials representing the three nations met at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh. The event followed ministers of tourism from the 10-nation ASEAN bloc approving the plan on Monday.

A joint statement, released after the meeting, said: “Ministers from China, Japan and South Korea expressed their strong support for and willingness to provide assistance to ASEAN to successfully implement the ASEAN tourism strategic plan.” The plan aims to help promote intra-ASEAN tourism marketing, develop products, improve quality, build human resources, and help attract investments, according to the statement.

“The support is very important,” said Cambodian Tourism Minister Thong Khon.

Lin Shan, inspector of the Department of Tourism Affairs for Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan at the China National Tourism Administration, said: “In the future, China is willing to expand further tourism cooperation … and provide support, technically and financially.”
