KUALA TERENGGANU, THURS:
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has been placed on alert for possible arrival of Thai and Cambodian illegal immigrants following heightened tension at their border.
Its Eastern Region Enforcement Chief First Admiral Datuk Ismail Hamzah said the agency was monitoring the situation to prevent encroachment by foreigners into the country’s territorial waters.
However, he said, it was too early for the agency to make any speculation arising from the situation in the Thai and Cambodian border.
He told this to reporters when met at the MMEA’s Eastern Region Maritime search and rescue exercise here today.
On the exercise, Ismail said, it was conducted to enhance skills and understanding on search and rescue procedures by MMEA officers.
