Cambodia ready for Khmer Rouge genocide trial

Gulfnews

Phnom Penh: Scholars and human rights groups are welcoming this week's Cambodia genocide trial, but warn that the effort to get justice for victims of the Khmer Rouge risks falling short.

Prosecutors will launch their case on Monday against 66-year-old Kaing Guek Eav, who is accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes, as well as torture and homicide when the communist Khmer Rouge held power in the late 1970s.

The human rights group Amnesty International said it welcomes the opening of the trial against Kaing Guek Eav, who commanded the main Khmer Rouge prison.

However, it added that the UN-backed tribunal should try more than the five defendants currently in custody, and deal with allegations of corruption among its own personnel.
