In Brief: Hun Sen to attend ASEAN meetings

Prime Minister Hun Sen announced Monday that he plans to attend next month's meeting of the ASEAN plus three group, which includes China, Japan and South Korea. The meeting will be held in Bangkok from April 10 to 12.

The announcement came during a temple inauguration ceremony in Kampong Speu province. The meeting was first scheduled to be held last December but was postponed because of political turmoil in Thailand.


In Brief: PM calls for strict law enforcement

In a speech marking International Women's Day, Prime Minister Hun Sen called on Friday for all relevant ministries and institutions to strengthen the enforcement of laws pertaining to human trafficking, sexual exploitation and domestic violence. "These issues have to be urgently addressed due to the fact that recently there have been some brutal cases of rape and murder happening in a number of provinces and municipalities," he said during a speech at Chaktomuk Conference Hall.


In Brief: ASEAN head receives g-20 invite

ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan has been invited to attend next month's Group of 20 (G-20) summit. The meeting, to be held April 2 in London, will focus on the economic crisis. "The invitation sends a strong signal of recognition of ASEAN by the G-20," Surin Pitsuwan said in a press release issued Friday. "Both emerging and developing countries as well as developed countries need to work together to contain the ongoing global financial crisis." He added that the invitation was an indication of Asean's emergence as a "regional player and a global actor".


In Brief: Tobacco exports fall

CAMBODIA'S main tobacco exporter, British American Tobacco (BAT), said its exports dropped significantly in 2008. The company exported just 1,000 tonnes of dried tobacco last year to Vietnam, chairman of BAT's Cambodia branch, Kong Triv, told the Post on Monday. In previous years, the company has exported about 1,500 tonnes annually to Sri Lanka, Australia and Singapore, along with Vietnam, he added. "But due to high freight expenses ... [BAT in 2008] exported only to Vietnam because of high demand at a suitable price," Kong Triv said. Dried tobacco is now US$1,300 a tonne.


In Brief: Coca-Cola new products

THE Cambodia Beverage Company and Coca-Cola SABCO have invested US$30 million for manufacturing two new Coca-Cola products - 1.5-litre and 500ml bottles, a company statement released Monday said. The US firm established production facilities to produce the new lines along with Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite in Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) bottles. The company also expanded can-line production. "Coca-Cola has chosen one of the best and latest technologies in the world for its Can line and PET line," said marketing manager Noun Pheng.


In Brief: ADB training offered

THE Asian Development Bank has announced a training program to help the Kingdom's senior public servants carry out economic reform policies, the body announced Monday. The Public Policy Training Program, established in 2007 and funded by the Japanese government, will equip officials with the skills to further integrate Cambodia into global markets. The program is expected to train 200 civil servants over a two-year period.


In Brief: Trade fair with Thailand

THE first Thai product exhibition to come to Cambodia since the two countries were embroiled in tensions over their shared border will take place from March 22 to 26 at Phnom Penh's Mondial Centre. "The Commerce Minister Cham Prasidh will preside over the opening ceremony," Seun Sotha, director of the government's Trade Promotion Department, said Monday. According to one Thai organiser, 122 Thai companies have registered to take part.
