Thailand has closed several of its popular tourist spots. Following clashes between Thai and Cambodian soldiers last week, the country's authorities have indefinitely shut some attractions near the Preah Vihear temple.
The Pha Mor E-Daeng cliff, the Khao Phra Viharn National Park and its gate to the Preah Vihear temple in Thailand's Si Sa Ket province are all closed, according to eTurboNews. The attractions have been shut off to tourists after violent clashes in the area that left two Thai and two Cambodian soldiers dead.
It is thought that the violence was sparked by a landmine explosion that seriously injured a Thai soldier in the Phu Ma Khua area of Thailand. Phu Ma Khua is just few kilometres from the Preah Vihear temple, which lies in an area which both Thailand and Cambodia claim as their own.
Following the explosion, Thai soldiers visited the area near the temple to check for and clear any more mines. Cambodian soldiers also travelled to the site, telling the Thai soldiers to retreat with claims that they were on Cambodian territory. The Thais resisted, leading to clashes between the two sides.
According to local reports, Cambodia has deployed more than 3,000 soldiers at the temple ruins. Thailand is believed to have positioned over 2,000 members of the military on Pha Mor E-Daeng cliff. Along with the Khao Phra Viharn National Park, these attractions are closed to tourists until further notice.
