The World Health Organization (WHO) says the number of confirmed swine flu cases has reached over 5,000 in some 30 countries around the world, with more than 60 deaths.
On Tuesday Thailand, Finland, and Cuba all confirmed their first swine flu cases. Canada also confirmed 40 new cases.
Most attention was focused on China however. Chinese authorities confirmed that a man was hospitalized with the virus after returning on a flight from the United States. A Chinese official said Monday this is China's first case of swine flu.
Beijing on Tuesday ordered stepped up flu monitoring nationwide and said it had found and isolated nearly all those who traveled on flights with the man.
On Tuesday Taiwan's Center for Disease Control confirmed that 17 of the 23 passengers who shared the flight with the Chinese man before flying to Taiwan are not infected. The centers said test results for two other passengers should be announced later in the day. Of the remaining four passengers, two travelled on to Cambodia and the other two have yet to be located.
