Robert McNamara, a former US defence secretary, died at the age of 93 on June 6, 2009.
Best known for his role in the Vietnam War, McNamara served under John F Kennedy during the Cuban missile crisis and was also considered to be a key strategist in US policy on nuclear deterrence. Between 1968 and 1981, he headed the World Bank.
