In Brief: UAE set to invest

THE United Arab Emirates is looking to invest in Cambodia’s agriculture and telecommunications sector, UAE Minister for Economy Sultan Bin Saeed Al Mansoori told Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen Wednesday, according to a government official. Hun Sen’s spokesman, Eang Sophallet, told reporters after a meeting between the two in Phnom Penh on Wednesday that project details and investment amounts had not been determined. The meeting was part of a three-day visit by the UAE minister that was due to conclude today.

THE Cambodia-Korea Phnom Penh Gyeongbuk Culture, Tourism and Trade Promotion Centre (PGCT Centre) is set to be launched next month, project manager Park Hee Chan told the Post Wednesday. No exact date had been set for the opening, which would be attended by Cambodian and Korean government officials, he said. Construction on the US$9 million project, funded by the Korean government, started in September last year and was originally due for completion in July. The centre was built by Korean company DKC&C Co. Park said office and retail space in the three-storey, 8,553-square-metre building was available for around $25 per square metre.

In Brief: Asiana to resume flights

SIEM REAP – South Korea’s Asiana Airlines will resume flights between Siem Reap and Seoul on November 17, a Phnom Penh-based manager of the firm said Wednesday, following their suspension at the end of last month. “We suspended the flights because of poor demand, no customers,” the manager said, declining to be named. The airline had previously flown the route four times per week, but suspended flights September 24. Arrivals from South Korea fell 31.23 percent in the first seven months of this year, according to government figures, with total air arrivals dropping 13 percent in the first eight months.

In Brief: Telcos meeting delayed

A telecoms meeting on pricing with officials of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and the private sector originally scheduled for Friday has been delayed until next week, a manager in the industry said. Minister So Khun is this week away in Laos, which prompted the rescheduling of the meeting, the manager added. On September 29, So Khun signed a circular with Finance Minister and Keat Chhon, which they also sent to Prime Minister Hun Sen, warning firms in the sector over “free” and low tariffs as well as tax obligations.
