In Brief: Battambang's first mall

BATTAMBANG’s first shopping mall will open its doors in early 2010, Battambang Supermarket Managing Director Phou Puy said Sunday. Construction of the US$9 million, four-storey retail complex on National Road 5 in O’char commune was 85 percent complete. Marketing of the retail space, which includes air-conditioning and elevators, had not yet started, he said. The complex has taken one-and-a-half years to build. Battambang Provincial Hall Finance Director Uy Liv said the mall would create jobs and boost the local economy. SOEUN SAY

In Brief: Health firm branches out

A SUBSIDIARY of Singapore-listed Malaysian healthcare group Health Management International (HMI) opened a representative office in Phnom Penh on Friday to entice wealthy Cambodians abroad for medical treatment. Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC) Director of Clinical Support Services Christine Lee said the company’s research showed that around 2 percent of Cambodia’s 14 million population were candidates for treatment abroad. Singapore, Thailand, South Korea and Vietnam are the most popular destinations, she said. HMI has two hospitals in Malaysia and 14 representative offices in Indonesia, Malaysia and now Cambodia.
