CEDAC to buy rice

The Cambodian Centre for Study and Development in Agriculture said it will buy 3,000 tonnes of organic jasmine paddy for about US$870,000 for local and export markets. CEDAC Enterprise Manager Lang Seng Haung said farmers from Kampong Cham, Prey Veng, Kampong Thom, Takeo, Kampot, Kampong Chhnang and Kampong Speu provinces would receive US$290 per tonne. Around 10 percent of the processed rice will be exported at $680 per tonne and the rest sold to local markets, he said. CEDAC sold 600 tonnes of organic rice in local markets last year.

Kampot trade down l KAMPOT – The number of trucks carrying goods from Vietnam into Kampot province across the Prek Chak international checkpoint fell 20 percent in October compared with the same month a year earlier. Hong Darareth, deputy chief at the checkpoint, blamed falling purchase orders resulting from the economic slowdown. Almost all cross-border trade is of vegetables and other consumable goods produced in Vietnam, he said. The number of foreign tourists crossing into Cambodia at the border dropped to 1,000 in October from 1,330 in September, but Hong Darareth said it was a normal fluctuation.

Southern Gold issue to fund local gold hunt

SOUTHERN Gold Ltd announced plans Thursday to raise US$4.6 million through an issue of up to 40 million shares to finance ongoing gold exploration projects in Cambodia and Australia. The Sydney-listed firm plans to roll out the shares in two blocks at $0.115 each in the coming months. A portion of the capital will fund work on four of the company’s seven Cambodian properties as part of its 2009-10 exploration programme announced Monday. Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) finances the other three sites.

Dam ready to go online

China’s leading dam builder Sinohydro Corporation said it will begin feeding electricity from its 10-megawatt (MW) Kamchay Dam in Kampot province to Electricite du Cambodge from December 7. Sinohydro spokesman Kim Sovan said the launch was two months behind schedule, as the company was waiting for government officials to be available for the opening ceremony. It is the first of three dams worth a combined US$280 million that the company plans to operate under a 40-year government concession. The three dams will have 180MW combined generating capacity.
