Singapore stay on course

VIENTIANE – Singapore continued their domination of table tennis competition, with the women’s team wrapping up a perfect set of group matches without dropping a single rubber. The ladies finished top of group A, ahead of Vietnam, and Thailand won group B, with Malaysia in second place. These teams now face off against each other in semifinals at 10am today before winners advance to the finals later at 2pm. Singapore are heavy favourites, having cleaned up at the previous SEA Games in Thailand in 2007, taking all gold medals on offer.

25th SEA Games opens

VIENTIANE – The 25th Southeast Asian Games officially opened Wednesday in Vientiane with a lavish ceremony at the brand new 20,000-seat National Stadium. Athletes from the 11 nations competing paraded around the track waving flags before Laos President Choummaly Sayasone declared the Games open, accompanied by a burst of fireworks.

China firm to build plant

MALAYSIAN firm Leader Universal Holdings announced it has contracted Beijing-based Huadian Engineering Company to build a 100-megawatt Sihanoukville coal power plant due by 2012. Huadian is a major producer of electricity in China, controlling 23,718 megawatts capacity in the country as of July. The Sihanoukville plant is 80-percent owned by Leader’s Cambodian subsidiary, with the remainder held by Cambodian International Investment Development Group. Leader is pursuing a separate proposal to build a 700-megawatt coal plant in Sihanoukville by 2015.

Terra ends exploration

TERRA Energy and Resources Technologies announced late Tuesday that it had wrapped up its contracted exploration for gold, rubies and marble on two Cambodian properties of Millennium International Group LLC. New York-based Terra said in a statement that it would prepare proposals aimed at securing the next stage of exploration and early extraction work at the sites. Under an agreement, the firm is entitled to collect 2 percent of royalties on the properties and pursue a 10 percent co-investment right, which the firm is considering, said CEO Dmitry Vilbaum.

HRP wants stats on immigration

Ou Chanrith, a lawmaker for the Human Rights Party, has written a second letter to Minister of Interior Sar Kheng, asking him to provide statistics on the number of immigrants who have been naturalised as Cambodian citizens during the past decade. “[People] are concerned because there are many immigrants. If they are naturalised foreigners who entered [Cambodia] illegally, they should be sent back,” he said in the letter.
