New Zealanders in Thailand are being advised to avoid all rallies and any areas of military or security force activity amid continuing political protests in areas of the capital, Bangkok.

Clashes between the Thai army and anti-government demonstrators have escalated in recent days, leaving at least 19 people dead and hundreds injured. The "red shirts" who support fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra have been protesting for nearly a month.

New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is urging New Zealanders to pay attention to the chatter on the street and be aware of their surroundings at all times. Anyone travelling or living in Thailand is being encouraged to register their details with the ministry.

MFAT says protests have been taking place round Rajadamnoen Rd and the Rajprasong intersection although protestors have also been moving around locations within the city at short notice. A number of main roads, Skytrain stations, shopping malls and tourist spots are being temporarily closed down as they become affected by the protests. The ministry warns that further violent clashes between protestors and security forces are possible, including against buildings associated with the Thai Government.
