FRIENDSHIP DEVOLVES INTO BRUTAL BEATING
A 25-year-old man in Koh Kong province was severely beaten by five of his associates on Monday, police said. Investigators said the victim knew his five “gangster” assailants and had described them as friends. On Monday, however, they apparently turned against him, pummelling him with a metal bar and leaving him to nurse his bruised body. The suspects managed to escape, but police said they are confident the perpetrators will be caught because the victim “knows their faces”.

MAN CARELESS in ENGINE FIRE: COPS
Police say a careless driver in Poipet town was at fault when his car burst into flames in the middle of the road Sunday. The man said he was driving into town when the car’s engine caught fire. Nearby villagers were at first too scared to help the man, petrified that the blazing vehicle would explode. But after he begged them for assistance, they extinguished the fire by dousing it with water. The man admitted that he had failed to keep his car’s cooling system in order. Police thus concluded that the fire was due to his carelessness.

THIEVES SWIPE FANCY NEW MOBILE PHONE
Two out of four accused thieves were apprehended Monday after they allegedly stole a woman’s flashy new phone not long after she bought it. Police in Phnom Penh’s Russey Keo district said the woman worked at a beauty shop. She bought the phone after she got out of work on Monday. While she was pacing back and forth in her home, admiring her new person-to-person communication device, four suspects burst in, threatened her with a knife and swiped the phone. The woman alerted the police immediately, who quickly apprehended two suspects and sent them to court. The other two, however, escaped with the phone.

MARRIAGE DENIED, DAUGHTER TAKES LIFE
A 26-year-old woman took her own life Monday because her mother refused to give her permission to marry her sweetheart, police in Kampong Chhnang said. The mother reported that she and her daughter had been out in the field that fateful day. When they returned home, the daughter announced that she would take a relaxing pre-dinner bath. But as the minutes went on, the mother grew increasingly alarmed. She walked into the room and found her daughter had hanged herself. She said her refusal to let her daughter marry was likely what prompted the suicide.
