Women's championship taking shape

Striker Sokom Sochieta kick-started her campaign at the National Women’s Football Championship in slick fashion as she inspired Steung Treng to a 3-0 win over Pailin at the Phnom Bak secondary school grounds in Banteay Meanchey province yesterday.

A perfect deflection from the edge of the 18-yard box saw Sochieta open the scoring for Steung Treng, and the fast paced striker was a dominant sight in the Pailin penalty area the rest of the way.

A terrible mix up between the goal keeper and the backline led to Pailin conceding an own goal, before Steung Treng wrapped up the rout through an Ok Lida solo effort.

Earlier at the Phnom Bak field, Battambang virtually pitched their tent in the Kandal half with Det Panida doing the bulk of the damage by belting home a brace. Mau Sokhoven and Huet Kimhong scored a goal each as Battambang raced to a 4-0 lead.

The hard working Chen Sira, who had three fast breaks to her credit, turned one of them into a late consolation goal for a 4-1 final scoreline.

Routs reign at Meanchey Uni

One sided matches were the order of the day meanwhile at Meanchey University ground, where Banteay Meanchey had Kampong Thom in a sea of trouble. A brace by Kim Sopeak set the pace for the hosts, who found goals at regular intervals from Tschie Chantrie, Uem Lun and Oeum Sovan to complete a 5-0 whitewash.

The first match of the day saw Siem Reap build on their 2-0 half time lead for a 4-2 victory over Pursat. Bom Savy’s penalty conversion midway through the first half set the ball rolling favourably for Siem Reap. Six minutes later Uen Yava doubled the advantage.

Tschum Mina and Son Sreteav found a goal each within three minutes of each other when the game resumed after the break. Just as the Pursat cause seemed as good as lost, Kung Rany and Rat Chantra struck to ensure a better verdict.
