Toll Royal Railway opens first phase of Cambodian Railway
The joint venture between Toll Group and Royal Group will manage the operation of the railway.
Initially, this section of the southern line will have limited operation, but traffic volume is expected to increase once all tests have been conducted.
This section of the line will be extended to the Sihanoukville container port. It will be completed and fully functional by May 2011.
Wayne Hunt, CEO and president of Toll Group’s global logistics division, said the opening marks an “important milestone in the ongoing development of Cambodia”.
“With the launch of an operational rail freight service between Phnom Penh and Touk Meas, cargo can be transported more easily around this area while also reducing vehicle congestion and truck over-loading on the roads,” added Hunt.
“This line is set to provide a valuable link to businesses throughout Cambodia, as well as linking up the country with the rest of South East Asia.”
He concluded by acknowledging that the project will open up opportunities for businesses along the line.
David Kerr, CEO of Toll Royal Railway, revealed that so far it had employed over 150 people. This number is expected to grow in line with the project.
“Safety is vital for us. We have invested heavily in appropriate training, protective clothing and equipment which will ensure a healthy and safe working environment,” said Kerr.
