PM Meets Ambassadors of France and Myanmar

Phnom Penh, December 21, 2010 AKP -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen warmly received here today at the Peace Palace newly-appointed Ambassador of France to Cambodia H.E. Christian Connan.

In the meeting, the French ambassador said he is proud and delighted to come to work in Cambodia. He further pledged to continue to stick to all agreements already signed by the Cambodian and French foreign ministers, Ieng Sophalet, assistant to the Cambodian premier told reporters upon the meeting.

The newly-appointed French diplomat also informed Samdech Techo Hun Sen of the development of Cambodia-France economic cooperation, including the export of Cambodian rice and agricultural products to France, and the interest of a French company in Cambodia’s telecommunications field.

In reply, the Cambodian prime minister welcomed the diplomatic mission of H.E. Christian Connan in Cambodia.

Agricultural field is a priority of Cambodia, said Samdech Techo Hun Sen, adding that Cambodia does not only want to export rice, but it also wants foreign investment in processing agricultural products for export.

The Cambodian premier expressed Cambodia’s ambition to become the world’s third or forth rice exporter.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen further wished success for the negotiation between the French telecommunications company and the local ones.

On the same day, Samdech Techo Prime Minister also met with outgoing Ambassador of Myanmar to Cambodia H.E. U Win Shen.

The outgoing Burmese diplomat profoundly thanked the Cambodian government and officials for their support to his diplomatic mission. He further appreciated Cambodia’s rapid development, both on the national and international arenas.

For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen praised H.E. U Win Shen for having successfully accomplished his diplomatic mission, especially in arranging the participation of Prime Minister of Myanmar H.E. U Thein Sein in the 5th CLMV and 4th ACMECS Summits hosted by Cambodia in mid November 2010, which helped further strengthen and expand both countries’ ties of friendship and cooperation in all fields.

Thailand Won't Allow Any Group to Use Its Territory to Mistreat Cambodia

Phnom Penh, December 21, 2010 AKP -- The Thai government won’t allow any group to use Thai territory to mistreat Cambodia, Thai Army Chief Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha said here yesterday during the meeting with Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

The visiting Thai army chief said his visit to Cambodia is to get advice from Samdech Techo Hun Sen and thanked the premier for his efforts to ease the situation between Cambodia and Thailand during the last two months, said Ieng Sophalet, assistant to the Cambodian prime minister.

In reply, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said now the situation between both countries have returned to normal and Cambodia will insist the stance to seek peaceful negotiation with Thailand to avoid weapon clashes, military confrontation, to prevent disputes from spreading throughout the border and to push for good cooperation between troops, police, and people instead.

He further stressed that what we have to do now is to push for better cooperation through joining forces to crack down on crimes and drug trafficking along the common border.

Regarding the three Thais sentenced to 18 months in prison by Siem Reap provincial court for trespassing into Cambodia, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said they have been freed and they are on the way to Phnom Penh to meet Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha.

On the same day, the Cambodian premier also met separately with Thai Foreign Minister H.E. Kasit Piromya and a group of Thai journalists. --AKP

PM Meets Thai Journalists

Phnom Penh, December 21, 2010 AKP -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen received here yesterday a group of 14 Thai journalists.

During the meeting, Samdech Techo Hun Sen told the visiting Thai journalists that the Royal Government of Cambodia does not want to see Cambodia-Thailand border tension as both countries are neighbors, but the peaceful cooperation and development in favor of both peoples living along the common border.

“I became a minister since I was 27 years old. Peace seeking in Cambodia was not easy. I am so bored with war, therefore I always prioritize the win-win strategy for development as well as for border tension resolution,” he said.

“I do not want to see a small spark cause a fire,” Samdech Techo Hun Sen stressed.

The 14 Thai journalists coming from different newspapers, TVs and radios, are on a four-day visit to Cambodia since Dec. 18. It is a visit exchange program approved by Thai and Cambodian governments aiming at better improving the relationship and cooperation between the two countries. --AKP

Cambodia Asks for Inter-government Joint Committee Meeting Between Cambodia and Thailand in February Next Year

Phnom Penh, December 21, 2010 AKP -- Cambodia made a proposal for an inter-government joint committee meeting between Cambodia and Thailand in February next year to solve some issues, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Hor Namhong.

The Cambodian foreign minister told this to reporters after he met on Dec. 20 with his visiting Thai counterpart, H.E. Kasit Piromya, who led a Thai delegation to visit Cambodia and participate in a celebration to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Thailand, adding that the proposal for solving the issues was put forward without relating to the reopening of the border gate at Preah Vihear Temple.

He also asked Thailand to urge the passage of the minutes of three joint border commission meetings in order to continue the border demarcation.

“After four time meetings between the Prime Ministers of the two countries, there is good development of the relations between our two countries, and also much mutual understanding, he said.

He said that Thailand agreed to reopen until 2012 a registration process for migrant laborers that will allow tens of thousands of Cambodian workers now at risk of deportation to remain in Thailand legally.

He also told the reporters of other issues dealing with mutual interests of the two nations during the meeting between him and Thai foreign minister. --AKP

”Kinal” Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

Phnom Penh, December 21, 2010 AKP -- A senior royal government has encouraged Cambodian medical doctors and pharmacists to increase their attention in medical and pharmaceutical research so as to help develop the country’s health sector.

The encouragement was made here on Dec. 18 by Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Yim Chhay Ly when he presided over a celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cambodian-made painkiller Kinal and an inauguration ceremony of a new building of PharmaProduct Manufacturing (PPM).

H.E. Yim Chhay Ly further said the success of the pharmaceutical plant PPM, particularly the recognition of Kinal globally, has reflected the talent and the high knowledge of Cambodians in pharmaceutical research and production.

Cambodia has started to produce Kinal on Dec. 18, 1960. The production was later on interrupted during the Khmer Rouge regime, before resuming in 1996 by PPM, a partner of Group Cerp Britain, one of the French major pharmaceutical distributors.

Kinal has been being widely distributed in Cambodia and in other countries around the world, particularly in Africa – Ivory Coast, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Guinea, Congo, Mauritania, Senegal, Cameroon, Mali, Madagascar, Angola, etc.

On the occasion, Health Minister H.E. Mam Bun Heng expressed his support for PPM and other pharmaceutical plants.

Cambodia currently has seven domestic pharmaceutical manufacturers. --AKP

The Fifth Samdech Hun Sen Cup To Begin on “7 January” Victory Day

Phnom Penh, December 21, 2010 AKP -- The annual football tournament for Samdech Hun Sen Cup will kick off on Jan. 7, 2011, the National Liberation Day.

Altogether 32 Cambodian teams will compete in this nationwide event, the fifth of its kind, which is scheduled to take place until Feb. 27, 2011.

The champions will win 80 million Riel (Cambodian currency roughly US$20,000) and the two runners-up will get 40 million Riel (about US$10,000) and 20 million Riel (about US$5,000) respectively.

The fair play team will get 5 million Riel (about US$1,250), the top scorer 1 million Riel (about US$250) and the best referee team 5 million Riel.

The first Samdech Hun Sen Cup was organized in 2007 with Khemara Football Club as champion. The Phnom Penh Empire Football Club, being later renamed Phnom Penh Crown won the first place for two consecutive years in 2008 and 2009, and the Defense Ministry Club won the tournament in year 2010. --AKP
