THE death toll from last week’s deadly stampede on Diamond Island has risen to 352 following the death of a 22-year-old man at Calmette Hospital.

Chhouy Meng, head of the emergency care unit at Calmette, said the man had died of multiple organ failure on Wednesday evening, shortly after being transferred to Calmette for urgent care.

“The victim was taken first to the Sihanouk Hospital Centre of Hope, but his condition was severe and he died,” Chhouy Meng said. He added that Calmette still had “around 20” stampede victims in urgent care, but was hopeful that the rest would survive.

Peter Li, the country director of emergency response NGO Side by Side International, said following the stampede that more casualties could surface in the coming weeks.

“When there is a stampede you can get stepped on but you feel OK … but it’s possible you have a blood clot,” Li said. “A lot of things, with head trauma, we don’t know.”
