Birthday party leads to sword showdown
POLICE arrested 10 men after they attacked each other at a birthday party in Battambang province on Monday night. According to police, a 26-year-old woman held the birthday party with her boyfriend, when another man called the woman. This made the boyfriend jealous and he destroyed her cell phone. Her 20-year-old younger brother intervened, prompting her boyfriend to grab a sword and chase after him and others in the village, after which police apprehended 10 men. They were later released.

Son attempts suicide in Tonle Sap river
A 20-YEAR-OLD man attempted suicide by diving into the Tonle Sap river in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district on Monday, but a passing fisherman rescued him from the water. An eyewitness said that the man, who lives in Sen Sok district, drank alcohol with friends in a park on the riverbank and told them that he did not want to live anymore because his father had remarried.

Drug arrests could yeild more information
BATTAMBANG town police on Tuesday arrested two men aged 18 and 23, after they received a complaint from a 24-year-old woman accusing them of committing an attempted robbery in Battambang province on Monday. Police said the men were arrested after they took illegal drugs at a railway station in the town. Police claimed that the men had both served time for similar cases. The suspects were sent to the provincial court for further questioning.

Earring thief caught red-handed
A 34-YEAR-OLD woman from Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district was apprehended by police after she stole earrings from three schoolgirls in Kandal province’s Kandal Stung district on Monday. Police said the woman rode her motorbike from Phnom Penh to Kandal province and bought candy. She arrived at a primary school and attempted to lure the three girls to a nearby pagoda to rob them, when a villager alerted police. The woman confessed that she had committed similar crimes twice before and was sent to provincial court for questioning.

Man arrested after raping his godmother
SEN Sok district police arrested a 44-year-old man after he raped his godmother, 56, on Sunday night. Police said the man drank alcohol with the victim at her home and waited until she was unconscious and then raped her. Her grandchildren alerted neighbours, who reported the crime to police.
