The Centre for National Culture and Social Ethics announced the distribution of 15,000 booklets in Phnom Penh and in the provinces, aiming to sensitise the drivers on the traffic rules.

Po Samnang, director of this non governmental organisation, announced that the distribution of booklets with the Traffic Law and of a pedagogical book about road safety will take place on the 24th of September in Phnom Penh.

“Through our action we want to celebrate the anniversary of the Constitution of the Kingdom, established in 1993 during the elections organised by the United Nations. It’s also about reducing the number of traffic accidents”, explains Po Samnang.

According to the Centre’s Director, the road situation still lacks structure. The number of accidents still remains too high. Handicap International Belgium counts an average of four deaths per day on the roads. According to the NGO, this number is the result of a lack of education and information. Through the distribution of these booklets it hopes to reach 30 to 40% of the road users. The distribution of these books targets the poorest people like the motodops, the tuk-tuk and taxi drivers.

This project, which will start in Phnom Penh, will be extended to other provinces; Kandal, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Speu and Takeo. These are the regions with the most dangerous roads.
