In Brief: Defence talks to begin Tuesday

The Cambodian and Thai defenCe ministers are to meet for annual talks in Siem Reap today, according to officials, who say discussions to reduce the military standoff on the border are likely to top the agenda. "The main point [of the meeting] is that we will try to reduce the military confrontation along the border," General Neang Phat, a secretary of state at the Ministry of DefenCe, said Monday. "And we will continue bilateral talks to resolve the remaining issues." Neang Phat said the Thai delegation are to arrive in Cambodia today and that the two parties will attend a reception and play golf together before talks start Wednesday.


In Brief: Govt, Donors to discuss reforms

International donors are to meet with government officials today for the 14th Government Donor Coordinating Committee (GDCC) , where donors are expected to evaluate the year's progress towards reform targets promoting responsible development. The GDCC meets twice each year to discuss the government's progress in areas such as corruption, good governance and land rights. Cambodia received around US$1 billion in aid revenue for 2009.


In Brief: New Cambodian consulate opened

Cambodia on Sunday officially launched its honorary consulate in Lowell, Massachusetts, an event presided over by Foreign Affairs Minister Hor Namhong. Koy Kuong, spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry, said Ou Sovann, a Sam Rainsy Party defector to the ruling party, was appointed as the honorary consul, adding that the new facility would provide services to the UScity's large Cambodian expatriate community.


In Brief: Miner's first exploration

Australia-based Southern Gold said Monday that it had completed its first exploration program for the 2009 season and is awaiting results. The company has four mineral properties in Cambodia where it is exploring for gold and base metals. The Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation is funding the three-year, US$4.5 million project. The company said "potentially significant mineralisation" was revealed in six trenches, with gold showings of up to 65 grams per tonne.


In Brief: Construction fees up

The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction saw revenue increase 60 percent last year, according to its annual report, released last week. Ministry revenues increased from 89 billion riels (US$21.6 million) in 2007 to 143.4 billion riels in 2008. The report says 130 billion riels ($31.6 million) were collected in official fees for property construction and development, up from 80 billion riels last year. Revenue from fees for construction services also increased in 2008.
