“Phnom Penh: According to figures form the Council for the Development of Cambodia announced recently, in the first six months of 2009, tourism was the sector that absorbed the most investment of more than US$300 million.
“The announcement said that among the investment projects that the Council for the Development of Cambodia agreed upon with private companies of approx. US$1,222 million, investment projects in tourism constitute approx. US$354 million.
“Based on the same figure, the projects that follow are investments in agriculture with approx. US$323 million, in industry approx. US$303 million, and in services such as investments in telecommunication and water supply worth approx. US$241 million.
“The same source continued to say that within the first six months of 2009, there were 53 investment projects, where 7 projects were in tourism, 12 projects in the agro-industry, 14 projects in the garment industry, 3 projects in the energy sector, 5 projects in the sector of mining, 2 projects in shoes producing, 8 other industrial projects, 1 project in telecommunication, and 1 project in water supply.
“Within the first six months of 2009, there were four more projects than in the same period in 2008, but looking at the total amount of money to be invested, there was a decline by US$3,205 million.
“The same source added that in the first six months of 2008, Cambodia received 49 projects with a total worth of US$4.427 million.”
