THE Cambodian National Volleyball League (Disabled) will host the third round of its 2009 Cellcard National Volleyball League this weekend at Olympic Stadium. All 10 teams will feature in action spread across Saturday and Sunday, with the hope of squeezing in 14 full games.
Siem Reap Globe Magazine Eagles are still the team all look up to, with a perfect record of five wins from five. The Kampong Speu Global Giving Scorpions are hot on their tails, however, with a 4-1 record.
The Kampong Speu side have also been announced as the team who will play against the HMAS Darwin volleyball team September 22 at Ream Naval base, as part of the 2009 Cambodian Navy/Australian Department of Defence sports afternoon.
Since 2005, the CNVLD has played matches against teams from HMAS Adelaide (2005, 2007), HMAS Toowoomba (2006) and HMAS Bathhurst (2008), with CNVLD sides the Kampong Speu CTN Koupreys and Kampong Speu Global Giving Scorpions winning on all four occasions.
During their visits to Cambodia, the Australian Defence Forces also engage in local community work, such as helping to build schools and latrines.
The Scorpions are one of the most exciting, dynamic teams in the 2009 Cellcard National Volleyball League. They are coached by Pin Sarath, one of the outstanding members of the Cambodian national team who took bronze at the historic 2007 WOVD Cambodia Standing Volleyball World Cup, and who will also play a key role in the national team's attempt to claim world No 1 spot at the upcoming 2009 WOVD Cambodia Standing Volleyball World Cup in December.
The Scorpions currently stand second in the 2009 Cellcard National Volleyball League and are striving hard for a place in the 2009 Grand Finals at the Olympic Stadium October 16.
Since 2007, the CNVLD Armed Art programme has provided a unique trophy for the annual Australian Defence Forces v CNVLD volleyball match, designed by Australian engineer Val Sutherland and manufactured from destroyed weapons. Having been torpedoed on each occasion by the Cambodian athletes with a disability, the trophy has yet to take pride of place in the Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh.
