There were 6 less traffic accidents during this year’s P’chum Ben holiday compared with last year, various provincial authorities reported on Tuesday. The holiday is a very busy time as Cambodians leave Phnom Penh to return to their homelands.
Phnom Penh Municipal police spokesperson Keat Chan Thirith told DAP News Cambodia that over the three days, “there were 125 cases of traffic accidents, but if we compare to 2008, it decreased 6 cases.”
This year’s crashes resulted in 18 fatalities, compared to 28 in 2008. But injuries were up, with 148 persons injured, compared to 117 in 2008. “We make recommendations to Cambodian people so the accidents will continue to decrease,” Thearith said.
But there was some discrepancy with the figures. Vice Municipal Police Chief El Narin told DAP News Cambodia that “From September 5-21, 2009, there were 30 traffic accidents, 15 fatalities, and 28 persons were seriously injured, and another 16 persons non-seriously injured.”
There were 8 cases of drunk driving, 16 cases of speeding, two cases of careless driving and “a few cases” where drivers did not obey rules, he added.
Siem Reap province, police chief Thong Sokun told DAP News Cambodia that he saw 11 traffic accidents.
Preah Sihanouk province saw 4 crashes with one death, 16 seriously injured and another 12 persons injured, according to local police.
Cambodia has become notorious in the region for its treacherous roads.
