Phnom Penh Municipal Court’s vice chief Chhay Kong said on Thursday that the general manager of South East Asia Television and Radio (SEATV) Sem Sovandeth has been arrested over the alleged embezzlement of US$7 million.
There was no explanation from the accused man during court questioning.
The general manager was arrested after a Japanese company who invested in SEATV found evidence of the embezzlement of their capital. The company filed a complaint with the Interior Ministry.
A source explained that in 2007, Sem Sovandeth and Kao Kimhourn cosigned with the Japanese for funds to build the SEATV station in Cambodia. Both Kao Kimhourn and a Japanese foundation alleged that Sem Sovandeth cheated the staff payroll, sourced stationery and office equipment at irregular prices, and “set wrongdoing on human resource officials.”
A total of over US$7 million was allegedly embezzled by Sem Sovan-deth from the SEATV project.
A source told DAP News Cambo- dia that, in addition to Sem Sovandeth, another 5 staff were arrested related to the case and questioned.
Investigations are continuing.
