A 62-year-old Greek national appeared in Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Wednesday to face charges of purchasing child pornography and child prostitution after allegedly soliciting sex from a 16-year-old girl.
Christos Kampalios, 62, was arrested in April at a guesthouse in Daun Penh district near Boeung Kak lake.
Kampalios told the court that he had never had sex with the girl, but had only taken her naked photograph and received a massage from her. The victim rebutted Kampalios’s statements, however, telling the court that he had given her money to perform sex acts on several occasions.
Defence attorney Dun Vibol accused local authorities of conspiring with NGOs to entrap foreigners in child sex cases, noting that the victim has been involved in three other paedophilia investigations. Deputy Prosecutor Sok Kolyan, though, argued that the photographic evidence on Kampalios’ camera demonstrated his guilt.
Judge Din Sivuthy said a verdict will be announced at a later date.
