Hundreds of Cambodians from local NGOs, international organizations and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia gathered on thursday to mark the 61st Human Rights Day, held under the theme of “we all need freedom of expression and justice.”
Navi Pillay, senior official for United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, said that the objective of this year’s celebration is to promote discrimination- free societies and a world of equal treatment for all, based on the belief that all human rights are born free and equal in dignity and rights. A joint statement from the meeting urged the effective implementation of the law on the defence and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities.
“We have to put an end to and eliminate all forms of trafficking in and exploitation of women and children by punishing the service or demanders,” the statement said. “We all have to protect and promote the rights of indigenous people as well as of minorities who are living in Cambodia, from discrimination of any form,” it said.
