$107m electricity deal

LEADER Universal Holdings announced Wednesday it had entered into a 25-year build-operate-transfer agreement with Cambodian Transmission Ltd to develop a power transmission system in Kampong Cham. The Malaysian firm will work with its Cambodian partner to develop the US$107 million project for Electricite du Cambodge (EDC), according to a filing to Bursa Malaysia. The 230-kilovolt transmission system will be developed over three stages funded by internal capital and bank borrowing, the statement added, with the whole power project expected to be completed by 2013. Leader is also building a 100-megawatt coal-fired power station in Sihanoukville through its 80 percent-owned subsidiary, Cambodian Energy Ltd. The power generated through the project will be supplied to EDC as part of a 30-year agreement.
New Siem Reap taxi firm

SIEM RIEP – An unlicensed Korean metered taxi firm, KJC Green Gas Company, has begun operations in Siem Reap, becoming the second of its kind to do so in the city. According to KJC Green phone operator Hem Phally, the company has operated four liquefied natural gas-powered cars in Siem Reap since January 10. Hem Phally said the director of KJC Green was unreachable but would arrive in the coming days. Um Saravuth, head of the transportation office of the Siem Reap province Department of Public Works and Transportation, said he had heard someone from the company contacted department officials for permission to run the business, but was yet to receive an application for the operation.
Finances still a concern

THE World Bank warned Monday that Cambodia’s prospects for economic recovery will be largely dependent on the environment for international bank lending. In a new report on financing in the developing world, the Washington-based organisation maintained that the Kingdom experienced a GDP contraction of 2.2 percent last year with a projected 4.2 percent growth for 2010. Fiscal space remained limited in Cambodia and Laos, it added. The Kingdom experienced a narrowing of credit in the first quarter of last year.
First local wind turbine

CAMBODIA unveiled it’s first-ever wind turbine Wednesday in the port of Sihanoukville, in a pilot project designed to show the benefits of renewable energy. A statement by the European Commission, which contributed 24 percent of the cost of the US$1.74 million project, said the turbine would contribute to the energy needs of the port, which funded 48 percent. The remainder of the capital was provided by the government of Flanders, Belgium, according to the statement, which will provide additional contributions to help monitor the return. The turbine is part of a European scheme aimed at demonstrating green energy use in the region.
