Travellers taking a gap year or volunteering abroad in Cambodia this year may like to immerse themselves in one of the country’s most lavish celebrations – New Year.
The event, which spans three days, takes place in April, starting on the 14th.
Siem Reap will be the focal point of the action, as each 24-hour period adheres to a particular theme.
The first is entitled Maha Songkran and will see people lighting candles for Buddha images, while Wanabat – as the second day is known – will see the area’s most needy offered gifts and donations.
Finally, Tngay Leang Saka prompts people to bathe statues of Buddha in perfumed water, providing a sight that those on a gap year in Cambodia will not forget easily.
Meanwhile, Cambodia has emerged from the shadows of its past to become an important and much-loved destination for people taking gap years in Asia, the Guardian pointed out last month.
