PHNOM PENH– Cambodia to build new four soccer training fields worth $5 million on 15 hectares of land to south of the capital, the move aims to raise the standard of the country’s soccer, said the officials said on Tuesday.
FIFA has pledged $400,000 and remains are to be financed by Vietnamese soccer club, Cambodian government as well as the local businesses, said May Tola, deputy secretary-general of the country’s Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC).
Four soccer training surfaces, dormitories, accommodations and match stadium as well as medical facilities will be built in the southern province of Takeo.
Officials also said Cambodian soccer needs to catch up the players in the region if they want to compete in the game.
“If we do not have proper soccer training fields, how can we develop our soccer,” May Tola told DAP.
The centre will be able to accommodate up to 300 people.
“More young loving soccer game will be recruited and trained at the centre,” he said.
The ground breaking ceremony is expected to take place next month.
“Once the construction is completed, it will be the country’s biggest project in our history in term of soccer game,” said May Tola.
Another Sok Sitha, of FFC, said the government began cleaning up the site, which is located about 40 km south of Phnom Penh, since last month and it is expected to complete with the next 5 years.
The Cambodia national football team is controlled by the Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC), but it is currently one of the weakest teams in the world and did not even attempt qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. Cambodia has four national teams of more than 100 players and coachers.
One of Cambodia's best players was Hok "Jet" Sochetra. Earlier in the decade he was considered one of the top 2 strikers in South East Asia along with Kiatisuk Senamuang from Thailand.
In 1997, Hok Sochetra won the best player award in Southeast Asia in 1997 the Golden Ball from Sanyo. He has scored 42 goals in 64 international matches.
This Southeast Asian nation has never won a soccer tournament and are ranked 178th among FIFA's 208 member countries, said the sport officials.
