Tribunal
Former Democratic Kampuchea head of state Khieu Samphan has been returned to the detention facility at the Khmer Rouge tribunal after a minor illness that kept him hospitalised for 10 days. UN court spokesman Lars Olsen said Khieu Samphan had been sent to Calmette Hospital earlier this month, though the situation was not serious. “He was kept for observation during the time he had a cold, but now they have decided that he can be discharged,” Olsen said. The 78-year-old suspect suffered a stroke in November 2007, though he seemed alert and coherent when appearing before the tribunal last month to appeal the extension of his pretrial detention for a third year.
