Cambodia’s newly ranked tennis No 1 Bun Kenny was listless in his 3-6, 1-6 loss to Israel’s Tal Eros in the first round of the Asian Tour Men’s Futures qualifiers in Bangkok Saturday.

The Asian Games hopeful struggled for the best part of the near hour-long contest to find his rhythm and range as his opponent raised the tempo to suit his all-court game. National coach Braen Aneiros, who is accompanying Bun Kenny on this three-event tour, was at a loss to explain his player’s performance. “For some strange reason, Bun Kenny wasn’t himself in that match,” he said.

Bun Kenny crashed out in the second round of last week’s Futures qualifiers, also in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, the Tennis Federation of Cambodia has released for the first time a list of national rankings for the men’s singles, doubles, U18s and U14s on the back of a new points system introduced at the recently concluded Cham Prasidh Cup.

On the strength of his victory in the men’s singles, Bun Kenny took the top spot with 250 points. Sok Samath, who lost in straight sets to Bun Kenny in the final is second on 180 points, while losing semifinalists, Pell Vanna and Seang Mao, share third on 120 points.

According to national coach Braen Aneiros, the Kingdom’s top player and double Southeast Asian Games bronze medal winner Tan Nysan, who is currently in France, would receive a ranking after his participation in one of the two domestic events before the end of the year – the Cambodian Open and the Tep Khunnah Commemoration Cup.

The Cham Prasidh Cup winning pair of Bun Kenny and Long Samneang take top billing in the men’s doubles ahead of Tep Rithivit and Chris Fosinetti. Kan Sophon heads the U18 singles category, with Long Samnneang, Touch Sophearoth and Mark Brandon placing immediately below him. Mark Brandon grabbed the lead in the U14 category ahead of Doum Sambath, Saman Moni Oudam and Sim Kakada.
