Former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra has resigned as Cambodia’s economic advisor and aid of Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday, citing personal difficulties as the reason behind his decision.
Bangkok, the 23rd of August 2010: Thailand’s ambassador to Phnom Penh has been reinstated in his capacity on Tuesday, immediately following the announcement of Thaksin’s resignation from his former post of economic advisor to the nation and its prime minister , Hun Sen.
Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromyat announced the resignation of now fugitive former Prime Minister Thaksin, also ordering the Thai ambassador Prasas Prasavinitchai to return to his post.
The decisions came as the Cambodian government announced that it is no longer engaged with Thaksin, who allegedly quit his post citing “personal difficulties” in completing the job.
In a reciprocal act, the Mr. Piromyat revealed that the Cambodian ambassador to Bangkok would also return to his post, having been relieved of his duties following the appointment of Thaksin in Cambodia and the subsequent removal of the Thai ambassador.
I’m glad and I thank the Cambodian government for its cooperation to boost bilateral relations,” Mr Piromyat said.
Tensions had flared between the two neighbouring countries after Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen appointed the fugitive former Thai premier as his personal and economic advisor. In addition, Phnom Penh refused to extradite Mr. Thaksin to face criminal charges in Thailand.
The move saw the withdrawal of the two Kingdoms ambassadors and a tense standoff that has carried into the now ongoing Preah Vihear Temple dispute and several other minor incidents.
