Alleged poisoner held after US$7,000 spree
Kampong Speu military police on Saturday arrested a 30-year-old woman accused of poisoning people and then robbing them in several provinces. Police arrested the woman after she was caught pick-pocketing at a local market. They said the notorious thief drugged her victims to make them faint, before she rifled through their clothes and bags. She allegedly stole US$7,000 worth of cash and goods during the spree.

Yelling bag-snatchers make off with US$3,000
Police are on the hunt for two men who snatched a woman’s handbag containing US$3,000 in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district on Friday. Police said the suspects allegedly yelled at the victim as she was riding her motorbike alone in an effort to threaten her. The victim, a mobile-phone goods seller, said she didn’t know if they had a weapon because she was too shocked by the yelling to notice.

Husband accused of killing his drunken wife
A 56-year-old man was arrested in Kampong Thom province last Monday after allegedly beating his drunken wife to death with a wooden stick because she was cursing him in front of his neighbours. Police said the accused called his wife, 40, to return home from her neighbour’s house, where she was having a few drinks. She swore at him to express her disapproval, after which the man dragged her back into their house and beat her unconscious. She was taken to hospital but died shortly after. The husband, who was jailed previously on domestic violence charges, said he didn’t mean to kill her.

Female officer killed in sisterly intervention
A female police officer died in Stung Treng province on Saturday after her brother-in-law stabbed her as she intervened in a fight between him and his wife. Police said the man was arguing with his wife after a day of drinking, during which he smashed two mobile phones. The victim then attempted to break up the argument and protect her sister, when the accused reportedly unsheathed a knife and stabbed her. The officer was sent to hospital but died soon after. Police said the man may have also been under the influence of drugs.

Student found dead after relaxing bike ride
A 20-year-old university student was found dead in a pond in Kandal’s Ponhea Leu district on Friday. Police said the man was stabbed in the stomach and beaten in the head before his body was dumped in the pond. The victim’s family said he had taken his motorbike for a relaxing ride last Monday but failed to return home. Police have concluded that the man was murdered.
