In Brief: South Korean delegation

A DELEGATION from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy of South Korea led by deputy Minister Kim Jung-gwan is to visit Cambodia from Sunday to Tuesday, according to a statement from the South Korean embassy in Phnom Penh on Tuesday. The embassy said the visit aims to exchange views on Korea-Cambodia energy resource cooperation prior to the signing of a bilateral memorandum of understanding. The document is scheduled to be signed when Prime Minister Hun Sen meets with the South Korean President Lee Myung-bak in Seoul during an official visit planned for this June. The visiting South Korean delegation will also join the Korea-Cambodia energy forum in Phnom Penh on Monday, said the press release.

In Brief: GE opens new office

GENERAL Electric formally launched its international office in Cambodia on Tuesday, according to a company statement. Cambodia is the seventh country in ASEAN that GE has invested in, said Stuart Dean, GE president for ASEAN. "We see a lot of opportunities here in the areas of healthcare, energy, oil and gas, transportation and water," he said. GE has had a presence in Cambodia since mid-2007, but it said the new office will have an official country representative. "Now we have set up an office in Phnom Penh and recruited the country representative for GE in Cambodia." The US-based GE is a diversified infrastructure, finance and media company that makes a range of products including aircraft engines, electrical generators and medical equipment. The company operates in 130 countries and employs more than 300,000 people. Last year, GE revenues were US$183 billion.

In Brief: Three injured in lightning storm

At least three people were seriously injured after lightning struck a gas station in Pursat province Sunday night, damaging 20 nearby houses. Lok Sary, Pursat police chief, said Tuesday that a mother and her two daughters were injured in the storm and sent to Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh. "We don't know what the total cost of the damage to the gas station and surrounding houses is yet, but we are working on it," he said.

In Brief: Annual talks to address border

Thai Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan arrived in Siem Reap on Tuesday for annual talks with his Cambodian counterpart, Tea Banh. Officials said on the top of the agenda for discussions is how to reduce military confrontation along the border by reducing troop buildup on both sides, particularly in the Preah Vihear area. "The secretariat is preparing the documents for Tuesday's talk," said an official from the ministry who did not want to be named. "Today, top officials for the meeting are playing golf."

In Brief: Disabled access law discussions

The National Assembly is discussing a draft law on disabled people’s rights this week that could require developers to take disabled access into account for all buildings used by the public. Under the draft law, all areas, buildings, premises, and transportation means owned by the state, public or private entities open to the general public must be accessible to people with disabilities unless the building qualifies for an exemption.

In Brief: Olympic official in Cambodia on visit

The president of the Olympic Council of Asia, Sheikh Ahmed al-Fahad al-Sabah, has arrived in Cambodia for a two-day visit in response to an invitation by the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia. During his visit, Sheikh Ahmed al-Fahad al-Sabah, who is also a national security minister in Kuwait, is scheduled to meet with Tourism Minister Thong Khon on Wednesday at Phnom Penh's Raffles Hotel Le Royal and with Prime Minister Hun Sen on Thursday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
