Battambang teams win nearly all the races on Takhmao river

THE 2009 Traditional International Standard Boat Racing Championship and kayaking and canoeing competitions, which were held on the Takhmao River in Kandal province, officially wrapped up Monday evening with boats from Battambang taking the lion’s share of prizes.

For women’s international standard 12-crew boats racing over 1,000 metres, Preah Vishnu Sathearanaka Senchey of Battambang won first prize in a time of 9 minutes, 50 seconds ahead of boats from Kampong Chhnang and Phnom Penh.

This same team also triumphed in the 22-crew race over 1,000 metres, taking just 8 minutes, 34 seconds to finish in front of teams from Kandal and Phnom Penh.

However, Kampong Chhnang Prampi Makara Sam An Sen Chey Serey Decheas Chan Mean Rith took first place in the men’s international standard 12-man race over 500 metres, beating another boat from Kampong Chhnang into second, with a Battambang crew in third.

For men’s 12-seaters at 1,000 metres, Chan Sar Sen Chey Baromey Dambang Kragnoung from Battambang finished first. Battambang’s Anglong Ta Our Sachey Baromey Kongkea dominated the 22-man class, taking gold over both 500 metres and 1,000 metres.

In canoeing, In Pheary from Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changvar Club won the 200-metres event, while Pum Narun and Say Pov, both from the Cambodian Navy team, finished second and third respectively. In Pheary also clinched the 500-metres title, ahead of Hol Lida from Kandal and Pum Narun.

Kayaking races saw Puth Chandara from Chroy Changvar High School take gold over 200 metres, with Neang Sopharith and Pol Som from the Navy Team placing in second and third respectively.

Pol Som added to his medal haul with gold in the 500- metres race. The Navy team beat the Chroy Changvar side in the kayaking pairs competition over both 500 and 1,000 metres.
