Burma will next June accept a visit from an assistant to the US secretary of state to ease tension between the both sides, Cambodian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hor Namhong said on Thursday.
“Myanmar’s Foreign Minister told me that the country is very pleased to welcome the visit by the US Assistant to Secretary of State to Myanmar next June,” he told reporters at Phnom Penh International Airport upon his arrival from New York where he joined the UN General Assembly.
“I also conveyed this message from my Myanmar counterpart to … [US Secretary of State] Hillary Clinton when we held bilateral talks,” he said.
Meanwhile, Hillary Cliton told me that “the US is considering lifting sanctions or reducing sanctions on Myanmar,” he said, adding that he also met for talks with special UN envoy Gabari to Burma. Clinton apparently said the Obama administration is aiming at using the ‘engagement policy’ with the Myanmar Government to ease tensions on both sides, he added
“That is a great point between the US and Burma, and Burma also is very glad to hear this issue,” Hor Namhong said.
Cambodia is starting to play a key role urging the democratic process and change in Myanmar, and impro-ving relations between the US and Burma, the political analysts said.
Myanmar, also known Burma, has been ruled by a military junta since 1962. The country has an extremely poor human rights record.
