Chairman of the Khmer Civilization Foundation (KCF) Moeung Son on Tuesday said that he is seeking to apologize for remarks that landed him a criminal conviction.
On July 14 2009, the judge of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court sentenced Moeung Son to two years in jail and a fine of CR7 million ($1,750), with compensation of CR8 million ($2,000) to the Apsara authority after convicting him of defamation after remarks about new lighting at Angkor Wat. The court also ordered the authority to arrest him immediately after the announcement of his sentence for publishing false information and incitement perpetrated on May 26 2009.
Phnom Penh Municipal Prosecutors on Tuesday decided to uphold Moeung Son’s conviction.
“I want to return back Cambodia and seek a talk with Deputy Prime Minister Sok An, also minister of Council of Ministers, to say sorry for past misdeeds,” Moeung Son told DAP News Cambodia from France.
He added that the decision of the Phnom Penh court is legal. “I will inform my lawyer to ask for forgiveness from the Appeals Court,” Moeung Son said.
Phnom Penh Court Investigator Chay Kong said that the decision is legal and according to procedures.
Government lawyer Pal Chandara said that Moeung Son caused problems by inciting chaos and urging Cambodians to protest the alleged problem.
