A Phnom Penh Court will announce on Dec 8 whether it will grant bail to Thai engineer Sivarak Chutipong, who has been charged with spying, deputy permanent secretary for justice Thawee Sodsong said on Wednesday.
Pol Col Thawee and Suwana Suwanjutha, director-general of the Rights and Liberties Protection Department, went to Cambodia on Monday to explore ways of providing legal assistance for Mr Sivarak, an employee of Cambodia Air Traffic Services which is a subsidiary of Thailand's Samart Corp.
He said they met the justice minister of Cambodia, who had promised fair treatment for Mr Sivarak and to allow his mother, Simarak na Nakhon Phanom, to see her son at Prey Sar prison at her request.
He had also met representatives from the Lawyers Council of Thailand and the Foreign Ministry. It was agreed that the Justice Ministry would provide information needed to fight the case and money from the justice fund to finance the legal battle in court.
Kao Soupha, a well-known human rights lawyer in Cambodia, will be Mr Sivarak's defence attorney, Pol Col Thawee said.
Mrs Suwana said Mrs Simarak can submit a request to visit her son to the Cambodian Justice Ministry.
Mr Sivarak was being held in a cell together with four other detainees. This showed he was receiving good treatment, since it was normal to cram about 25 inmates at a time into a cell in Cambodia, she said.
