Prime Minster Hun Sen on Monday said that Cambodia should not export stone for construction to foreign countries because demand in the local market is also high.
“We need stone for construction and we also need it to produce cement,” Hun Sen said at a ceremony of a 193 MW hydropower plant in Kampot province. “Our stone is also not old enough and it is good cement product …
Some regions in the country do not have enough stone for construction, like Svay Rieng province near border with Vietnam. This province needs stone for the construction of buildings. We imported the red stone from Vietnam for this construction.”
He did not elaborate on how much amount of stone Cambodia exports to other countries. In May this year, Hun Sen also issued directives to ban sand exports for the sake of environment protection after some river banks collapsed.
According to local reports, Cambodia has previously exported 40,000 to 50,000 tons of sand per month from its coastal province of Koh Kong, with an annual value of around US$35 million.
