CAMBODIA’S Tan Nysan was simply outclassed by a rampant Cecil Mamiit of the Philippines Wednesday in his men’s singles semifinal. Mamiit completed a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory over the Kingdom’s top man to stay on course for a historic third successive SEA Games men’s singles title.
Assistant coach Yi Sarin noted that Tan Nysan had been ousted by the same player and in the same round at the previous SEA Games. “Mamiit is a very good player with many years of experience,” he stated. “It’s not too bad for [Tan] Nysan.”
Tennis Federation General Secretary congratulated his player for achieving a second bronze at the SEA Games. “I’ll try to contact [our] sponsors to try to let my players compete in more friendly competitions with other players in the region,” he asserted. “Cambodian tennis will be recognised in the near future.”
In the accompanying men’s semifinal, Philippines sensation Treat Huey managed to squeeze past a resilient Danai Udomchoke of Thailand 7-5, 7-6 to set up an all-Filipino final today.
Earlier Wednesday Indonesia confirmed a gold and silver haul from the women’s singles, with compatriots Lavinia Tananta and Ayu Fani Damayanti beating Filipinos Denise Dy and Riza Zalameda respectively in straight sets. Tananta pushed past Dy 7-5, 6-4, while Damayanti made even less work of her opponent with a 6-3, 6-2 victory to book her place in today’s final.
