ASEAN should adopt a new development model in which governments embrace the private sector, the bloc’s Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan said Monday. Speaking in Jakarta, the secretary general said the world was moving away from an approach by which governments “are doing everything by themselves”, adding that companies were necessary to help funding and develop technology. Surin was discussing strategies to carry out the Comprehensive Asian Development Plan, an overarching blueprint for regional cooperation and integration, with the heads of Nippon Keidanren, Japan’s association of business organisations.
