Tuesday, 02 February 2010 15:00 Nguon Sovan

A NEW US$7.8 million rice mill will open in Battambang Wednesday after 18 months of building work. The new mill, operated by Baitong Co, will use the latest technology to produce 720 tonnes of processed rice per day, adding up to 259,200 tonnes a year. President Phou Puy explained that he expects the mill to standardise Cambodian rice to cater for the European market. At the moment, Cambodia exports only 6,000 to 7,000 tonnes of processed rice to European markets per annum due to the lack of hi-tech rice-milling equipment.

Cotton exports to China

Tuesday, 02 February 2010 15:00 Nguon Sovan

AROUND 100 tonnes of raw cotton is set to be exported to China later this month, according to the project manager of Seladamex cotton processing plant in Battambang province. Seladamex has signed a deal to supply a Chinese factory with two-thirds of the plant’s raw cotton stock on February 28. Seladamex Project Manager Kong Chan declined Monday to name the other company involved. Raw cotton is currently being sold for around US$2,000 per tonne on international markets, an increase of $500 on prices recorded late last year. In October last year, the plant planned to export 1,000 tonnes of cotton to Vietnam. That plan was put on hold due to cotton shortages.
