Boxers back in the ring

LOCAL kickboxers Chey Kosal, Outh Phouthang and Pich Sophan have been given permission by the Cambodian Amateur Boxing Federation to fight this weekend, with Chey Kosal taking on Long Sophal Saturday at Bayon TV. The other two have yet to see their opponents confirmed. The trio will make their return to the ring for the first time since being banned by former federation president Oum Yourann last July. Pich Seiha’s boxing licence was reinstated by the new federation committee as well, and he won his comeback bout against Chan Ratana by points decision Saturday at Bayon TV.
IDG construction expo

INTERNATIONAL Data Group (IDG) will host an architecture and construction expo over three days at the start of April in conjunction with the Ministry of Land Management. IDG Business Development Manager Ouk Chipphal said the event, the first of its kind in the Kingdom – to take place at Phnom Penh’s Diamond Island Convention Centre – will feature products and services from 30 countries, including Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and China. The event will start on April 1.
Bank meet in Siem Reap

SIEM Reap will host the Southeast Asian Central Banks (SEACEN) governors’ meet Friday, an annual congress aimed at improving financial cooperation and understanding in the region, a National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) official said Tuesday. All ASEAN members will take part, minus Laos, which will act as an observer, along with South Korea, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Mongolia, Fiji and Papua New Guinea, said NBC Deputy Director General Nguon Sokha. The process aids sharing of ideas among countries that are mostly short of resources in banking and finance, she added. The Asian Development Bank and International Monetary Fund will also take part in this year’s two-day event.
CHC becomes SAMIC

THE Cambodian Health Committee (CHC), an NGO offering healthcare, has changed its name to SAMIC Ltd in a bid to avoid confusion over its status, which since 2005 has also been as a microfinance institution, General Manager King Kap Kalyan said Tuesday. First established in 1994 as a healthcare provider in rural areas, CHC has for the past five years also offered a full range of microfinance services in the provinces as a body separate from the Cambodian Health Committee. As of the end of December, SAMIC had outstanding loans of US$5.5 million to 11,000 households across seven provinces, said King Kap Kalyan.
