PHNOM PENH, Feb. 23 — The United States on Tuesday provided 13.4 million U.S. dollars for a program designed to improve the health and quality of life of Cambodians by reducing the impact of HIV and AIDS, especially among vulnerable groups.

The five-year Sustainable Action against HIV/AIDS in Communities program will offer care to people affected by HIV/AIDS, including people living with the disease and orphans, while also seeking to prevent new infections among groups at high risk of acquiring the disease.

The program will be implemented by the Khmer HIV/AIDS NGO Alliance (KHANA), a Cambodian-run NGO that the United States has funded since 1997.

In a statement released Tuesday by the U.S. embassy in Phnom Penh, it said over 700 people – including people living with HIV, children affected by HIV, and members of the government, civil society and development partnersgathered at a launch event at Wat Opot in Takeo Province, some 85 km south of Phnom Penh.

Giving speech at the event, U.S. Ambassador Carol A. Rodley praised the program's community-based approach.

The program also seeks to improve the ability of civil society to take the lead in delivering quality and sustainable HIV prevention and care services.

Total U.S. support for HIV/AIDS programs in Cambodia is 18.5 million U.S. dollars this year. (PNA/Xinhua)
